Four-year-old Marioli Arteaga has gotten dressed up for school because it's a holiday and dressing up is a tradition. Traditions among her people, the Guarani of Bolivia, are cherished. But so, increasingly, is progress.
CWS's partner in this area, CERDET (Centro Estudios Regionales de Tarija), is helping restore a sense of empowerment and rightful ownership of their lands to the Guarani, who have long been exploited by landlords in the traditional patron system. CWS has provided this community with small tables and chairs for their school and Hygiene Kits for their health center.
Since 2005, two young adult Guarani from the community have been able to pursue their college studies with a small grant from the CWS-supported Chaco Program. With luck and effort, these children and young people can have a future where cherished traditions are combined with a better life.
