Three hundred girls and other community members are gaining leadership and livelihood skills in 20 rural communities/villages in Mbale, Uganda, with the support of Church World Service and partner the Foundation for Development of Needy Communities.
Girls ages 12-24 participate in the Girl Child Empowerment program, learning vegetable gardening, animal husbandry, and other income-generating skills. Communities are also learning about and being encouraged to build fuel-saving stoves, which cut down on firewood usage and unhealthy, polluted kitchens.
Twenty-five trainees have learned beekeeping and are managing their beekeeping farms for good results. And, six groups in Rongoro, Bukaya, Kyemula, Wapondo, Nasyera, and Matua have prioritized development issues in their communities and are working with various programs to address their needs.
