The first phase of a three-year food security and community development project, which is benefiting six communities in Managua department that are vulnerable to natural disasters and droughts. The project is addressing some of the main causes of food insecurity in the area by integrating short-term food production and diversification activities with long-term soil, water, and micro-basin management techniques.
One hundred seventy families are benefiting directly through the provision of appropriate seeds, plants, and training – which the families will pay back to community seed banks. Seventy of the families will be trained and equipped to use rainwater to irrigate crops, vital knowledge for the summer months. Thirty of the families will receive energy-efficient stoves which will reduce the use of firewood and create better health conditions in the homes themselves.
CWS's funding partner for this project is Foods Resource Bank.
