In Svay Rieng Province, 5,398 villagers--including 1,473 children--are gaining better access to health care, education, and clean water, with the help of Church World Service.
Self-empowerment is a key to every Church World Service-supported project. This is being accomplished in 30 CWS-assisted villages in Svay Rieng, where 147 village development committee members, along with other villagers, are now managing road and school improvement projects, and constructing culverts and small-scale irrigation canals. With CWS support, the communities have also learned to manage basic health care services, and trained traditional birth attendants from the communities are delivering babies.
Church World Service continues its work in other villages in the province, helping to improve water and sanitation in 19 villages in Romeak Hek and Rumdoul districts, along the border of Cambodia and Vietnam. Before CWS came, most families drank water from unclean sources and, because fuel is in short supply, did not boil their water. With village assistance, CWS has drilled 156 wells and constructed 90 latrines. Community members are learning about well maintenance and repair, and establishing home gardens near the wells.
With clean water for drinking and washing their hands, new latrines, and produce from their new gardens, families are getting sick less often and improving their nutrition.
Support for Church World Service--along with the generous support of the United Methodist Committee on Relief--helps make this program possible.
