Landmines

Anti-personnel landmines have killed more than 500,000 people worldwide. An additional 300,000 people currently live with the physical and emotional scars caused by landmine explosions. Landmines honor no peace agreement or ceasefire. Once "sown" they remain active for days, months or years. Conflicts may end, but landmines remain. When mines explode, they do not distinguish between armed combatants and innocent civilians. Most of the 26,000 victims claimed by landmines each year are women and children.
