Sumatra Flood-Langkat – Aceh Tamiang Situation Report III
December 29, 2006
In the wake of the December 18 earthquake that hit Sumatra - damaging or destroying more than 600 homes - heavy rains are now causing flooding in the north, east, and centra Aceh regions of Sumatra. Church World Service is responding as part of the international coalition Action by Churches Together.
Current Situation
General coordination and data is limited. Affected areas are still very muddy and dirty.
-
Langkat-North Sumatera
In Besitang sub district, where YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU) is working in Bukit Kubu village, next to the former Besitang railway station (Lingkungan 9), 225 families have "returned" home, but are still staying in simple tents in front of their houses. They are trying to clean their homes and the public mosque of mud and debris. Water used for cleaning is sourced from the river and wells that are still dirty, making people vulnerable to skin diseases. Clean water is obtainable from other surrounding villages, approximately 1,5 km away.
-
Aceh Tamiang
As the water has subsided, internally displaced persons (IDPs) have left camps to return to their houses and start cleaning the mud and debris. Cleaning efforts has been difficult due to unavailability of clean water. Most wells in the areas are still dirty.
