Liturgies in Response to Terrorist Events
Suggestions: Scripture, Prayer & Hymns

The following is a collection of materials that may be used on or around September 11. Some piece may be more appropriate for certain communities than others. Although we have all been affected by the events of that day and the days that followed, each particular worshipping community brings different needs and context to their worship.

Worship planners are encouraged to pick an chose what best fits their own community.

Whether the gathering is large or small, formal or informal, it is especially important for the Church to be active and visible at this time. In the face of overwhelming loss and utter evil, only the faith community brings hope. It is God’s gift and our calling.

Please feel free to take these suggestions and shape them to fit your needs.

Scripture

Old Testament:
Isaiah 33: 15-22
Psalm 46: 1-7

New Testament Lesson:
Romans 8: 35-39
Gospel: John 11:17-44

Prayer

Lord Jesus, as you wept at the death of Lazarus and faced your own agony and death, be compassionate upon those who grieve. Help us to live in your promise; give us hope, ease our fears, and give us the courage to go forward in your name. Amen.

Hymns

Built on a rock
Healer of Our ev’ry Ill
My Hope is Built
Precious Lord, Take My Hand
Lord, Whose Love In (Through) Humble Service
My Life Flows On
In Suff’ring Love
Out of the of Depths
When Aimless Violence Takes Those We Love
If You Will Trust in God to Guide you
How Long, O God, How Long?

When in the Hour of Deepest Need
O God, Our Help in Ages Past
The Church’s One Foundation
Through the Night of Doubt and Sorrow
God! When Human Bonds Are Broken
Thy Holy Wings
A Shelter in the Time of Storm
Lead Me, Guide Me
Ashes
On Eagle’s Wings
Though the Mountains May Fall
Shelter Me, O God
The Hiding Place
A Shelter in the Time of Storm
I Want Jesus to Walk with Me
Lead Me, Guide Me
Days Are Filled With Sorrow and Care
Come, Ye Disconsolate
