The Americas and the Caribbean


There were 648,900 refugees and asylum seekers in the Americas and the Caribbean from a wide range of countries at the end of 2006. The United States was host to 147,200 of them.

Principal hosts of refugees were Venezuela (208,500) and Ecuador (207,500).

Church World Service resettled 203 refugees from Latin America in Fiscal Year 2007 (Oct. 1, 2006-Sept. 30, 2007).

Along with its resettlement of refugees, CWS/IRP participates in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Cuban/Haitian Program by providing services to newly arrived entrants to the U.S. To learn more about this program visit our Miami Office.
