How to Help - Cosponsor a Refugee
The community plays a key role in helping to acclimate refugees to life and culture in the United States and in helping refugees become self-sufficient. Cosponsoring does not necessarily have to be one individual helping, but rather can be a group effort among members of a congregation, church group or community group. There is a range of ways to help local refugee families including:
- Providing food
- Providing household items (home, furniture, clothing)
- Transporting refugees to appointments until a car is found
- Loaning trucks for the movement of large items
- Tutoring family members in English
- Assisting in the job searching process
- Offering storage space for donated items
- Mentoring
- Orienting family to life in the community
