Helping to provide food security in Kenya

Kajiado Livelihood Program, Kenya

Church World Service seeks funds to implement food security programs in the Kajiado District in Kenya. Working together with churches in the region, the program will benefit Maasai, Kikuyu, and Kamba families whose herds have been depleted through disease, recurrent drought, and famine.

Need: Due to delayed and insufficient rainy seasons, encroaching large land settlements, drought, and disease, herders are having difficulty surviving in Kenya. Over the years, herds are being depleted and overgrazing has been destructive to whatever vegetation still remains. Various water systems developed in the past have deteriorated, because water management was not established. All of these factors result in devastating famine in the region.

Target Population: This project serves ethnic minority groups suffering through drought-induced famine conditions in Ngong/Magadi, Central, and Mashuru Divisions of Kajiado District. Special consideration is given to the most vulnerable, particularly female-headed households, who have no form of income.

Partnership & Collaboration: Key networking partners for the Kajiado Livelihood Program include the National Council of Churches of Kenya, the Maasai Rural Training Centre (a religious non-governmental organization founded in 1963), the District Coordinating Committee, and the government departments of water, agriculture, and rural development. Communities served are asked to provide 5-25% of needed funding, depending on capacity.

Project Activities:

  • Rehabilitation of dams
  • Water management committee organization and training
  • Distribution of farming and agricultural supplies and equipment
  • Training in the areas of disaster preparedness and conflict mediation

Outcomes:

  • Food shortfall will be considerably reduced one year after completion.
  • Village water committees will understand roles and function effectively.
  • Appropriate drought mitigation and preparedness measures will be in place to safeguard livestock losses and food shortfalls.

What your gifts can do:

$1,500 – Technical training for community water committees

$3,000 Seeds, tools, and livestock for 125 households

$5,300 – Rehabilitation of two earth dams to conserve water

Total Program Budget: $ 134,955

*These examples reflect the average costs of providing water-related tools and support to African communities. Gifts to the of the CWS Africa Initiative "Water for Life" fund are used to support this or similar water resource development projects in Africa.
