A Long Walk
Create a life-size game board on the floor of a large room or
hallway, or better yet, outside on a parking lot. Mark out about
100 spaces with 8-1/2” x 11” sheets of paper taped
to the floor or outside marked with chalk. Along the path of the
board, designate at random intervals the 12 instruction spaces
described below. Tape a copy of the instruction
by each designated square. |

|
To play the game: Start the children
out in Sudan in pairs. Roll a die or turn a spinner to determine how many
spaces for each turn. When they land on an instruction space, they should
do the action described. Read the instruction spaces aloud as they pass
them, even if they don’t land on them. The game is over when everyone
is safe in a new home. All are winners.
Materials: paper and tape or
chalk, spinner or dice, shredded wheat in small paper bowls, blanket,
2 or 3 plastic gallon jugs filled with water, a world map
Instruction Spaces:
START
-
Crouch down to hide from soldiers until your next
turn
-
Backtrack to avoid a hungry lion (go back 4 spaces)
-
Carry a gallon of water the next 10 spaces for as
many turns as it takes you to move that far
-
Wade across a river with crocodiles in it —
take off your shoes and roll up your pants legs for the next turn
-
Run in place until your next turn
-
You had to climb a tree to sleep on a branch. —
Skip your next turn so you get enough rest
- Eat some grass for breakfast because you ran out of food (use shredded
wheat to eat while on this space)
-
Rest in Ethiopia for awhile (lie down under a CWS
Blanket while you wait for your next turn)
-
It is no longer safe in Ethiopia (go back 5 spaces)
-
Arrive in Kenya and go to school (stay in space until
2-4 other players join you)
- Wait here for all other players to join you on the plane to fly to
America. While you wait, look at a map to see how far that would be.
(Note: regardless of number thrown, all stop here until everyone has
reached this point. Choose one person to throw/spin for all.)
-
New Home: Meet your new family!
Give thanks to God for blessing you with people who care about you
and about building a better world.
