1. Map Study. Use
a globe or world map
to show where Bolivia is located. Distribute the coloring
activity for the children to color.
Materials: globe or world map, coloring
handout, crayons
2. Something Fishy!
Taste test different kinds of fish which can be obtained in small
cans and do not require cooking or preparation: tuna, sardines,
salmon, mackerel. The children may not care for the taste of some
of these. Remind them that fish is a very good source of protein.
This is one reason why helping people raise fish to eat makes the
world a better place. What are their favorite fish to eat? What
are their favorite fish to look at?
Materials: tins of tuna, sardines, salmon,
mackerel, plastic forks, napkins, pictures of the fish they are
eating
3. Make
fish puppets.
4. Make
a fish mobile.
5. Crayon resist: Color
a “school” of fish on the glossy side of a piece of
poster board. Add some seaweed and other things you might find under
water. Press down very hard with crayons to make the colors very
dark and heavy. Water down some blue tempera paint and using a damp
sponge dipped in the paint, dab the whole paper with blue paint.
The paint will not stick to the heavy crayon and the poster will
look like an underwater scene. Place it on display in the fellowship
hall.
Materials: crayons, poster board, blue
tempera paint, sponge
6. Make up a song about fish.
Here is an example of one you could sing to the tune of "Six
Little Ducks that I Once Knew:"
Six little fish that I once knew
Fat ones, skinny ones, fair ones too
But the one little fish with the fin on his back
He fed the children like a mac, mac, mac
Mac, mac, mac, mac, mac, mac
7. Raise money for Tools
& Blankets Program. For example,
the Children’s Group of Westminster Presbyterian Church
in Baker, Minnesota, sold cookies. Others have sold pizzas.
Your group might make, decorate, and sell fish-shaped cookies.
Decorate the area where the sale is taking place with a
fish net and some of the other fish
crafts from this lesson. Or take a collection during the service
with several children carrying their fish “swimming”
down the aisle while others carry the net to collect the offering.
Make fish-shaped “thank you” notes for all who participate.
Materials: cookie-making and decorating
supplies, paper, crayons, scissors
