- Map Study. Find Pakistan
and Afghanistan on a globe or world map. Distribute the coloring
activity sheet for the children.
Materials: map
or globe, coloring activity sheet, crayons
- Entering the tent. Prepare
a tent made of blankets (from CWS or otherwise) and quilts draped
over some chairs. Invite the children into the “tent”
and ask them to imagine that they have been magically transported
to a refugee camp in Pakistan. Often when people first arrive
in a refugee camp, they don’t even have this much shelter.
Ask them to imagine what it would be like to leave everything
they had and live in this tent for a month or more. What would
they miss? What would they need?
Materials: blankets, quilts, string
or masking tape, chairs
Sit in the tent and play school. Talk about items that they use
in school. What would it be like to be in school if these things
weren’t there?
Eat a snack under the tent. Snacks that the children could eat
under their tents might consist of “Hindustani Tea”
and fresh fruit.
To make "Hindustani Tea"
- Heat together in a 3-4 qt. saucepan 6 c. water and 7 tsp.
loose tea.
- Boil 10 minutes.
- Add 6 c. milk.
- Heat to boiling.
- Add to taste: 10-15 tsp. sugar.
Tastes best when prepared 2 or more hours in advance and set
aside. Reheat to serve. Serve with fresh fruit. You could also
serve Indian
chapatis, which are a something like Mexican tortillas.
Materials: tea, fruit, chapatis
Option: In advance of this class, collect the
kit materials from the parents directly and hide them around
your room. Show the children the list of items in the CWS School
Kit. Ask them to leave the tent and
search for those items. Bring them to the tent as they are
found.
- Assemble School
Kits. Invite children to decorate with fabric paint
or markers pre-made cloth bags (12"W x 14"L with a
cloth handle and a closure — Velcro, snap or button). Place the
items listed on the take-home sheet into the cloth bag. Fold the
top over and secure the closure. Shipping

bags, cardboard carton, sealing tape, fabric paint or markers)
Mark the progress of creating kits by making a Heart Quilt displayed
in a place where everyone can see it. Use a big sheet of wide
craft paper (about 30” x 60”) in a color of your
choice for the background. Give each child a piece of colored
construction paper cut 8” x 8”. Glue a red heart
onto this piece. Onto the heart, draw or glue pictures of various
items that could be in a CWS Kit. For each school kit
donated, glue a completed “quilt block” onto the
large background piece.
Materials: paper, red construction paper,
scissors, glue
- Assemble
Hygiene Kits. On the hand towel, place the other items
listed on the take-home sheet. Wrap the towel around the items
and tie with a ribbon or yarn. Place this package in a one-gallon
plastic bag with a zipper closure. Shipping

boxes, sealing tape, ribbon or yarn
Mark your progress on a large thermometer drawn on poster board.
Fill in the mercury column with a red marker as kits are donated,
indicating the number of kits on the side of the thermometer.
Materials: poster board, colored markers)
- Say THANK YOU to those who contribute.
Make “thank you” notes by gluing little pieces of
fabric to paper to make it look like a little quilt. On the back,
print a message, such as “Thank you for helping others.”
Materials: various pieces of fabric,
scissors, large index cards, glue, pens
