Local Hire Expatriate – Pre-CIS Field Team Position

Joint Voluntary Agency (JVA) is a program administered by Church World Service (CWS), which is an international NGO registered in Kenya. JVA is primarily responsible for implementing an operational refugee-processing program in Eastern and Southern sub-Saharan Africa on behalf of the Department of State/Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration.

We are seeking qualified applicants for the position of Caseworker, a position based in Nairobi (Kenya) with opportunities to travel throughout Eastern and Southern Africa. Interviews will be held both in Nairobi and over the phone. Both prospective candidates and successful applicants are expected to arrange and pay for their own travel and expenses traveling to and from Nairobi, and for their accommodations in Nairobi. This includes travel home at the end of their employment with JVA.

Below are details of the position:

POSITION DESCRIPTION

This position is primarily responsible for conducting personal interviews with refugee applicants in order to obtain biographic and demographic information to complete a refugee case history as required by JVA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This involves frequent travel to refugee camps in sub-Saharan Africa. This position reports directly to the Assistant Supervisor for Field Team Leaders and Caseworkers and works closely with other field team staff and interpreters.

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS

Qualifications and Experience

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills
  • Demonstrated computer skills especially in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to type 40 wpm

Desired competencies

  • Previous refugee processing or domestic resettlement experience
  • Previous Africa work experience
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and in difficult tropical conditions
  • Ability to relate well with others on a multicultural team to achieve desired objectives
  • Ability to give attention to detail
  • Ability to follow directions and implement policies and procedures from his/her supervisor with a positive and receptive attitude
  • Ability to conduct oneself in a professional and courteous manner to represent the best interests of JVA and CWS
  • Ability to contribute to a team effort to implement the U.S. Refugee Program in Africa
  • Special Requirements
    The candidate should be of good health, willing and able to travel extensively, sometimes on short notice and under difficult conditions. He/She should be flexible and able to work under pressure and over long hours in a multi-cultural environment.
