JVA/Nairobi 2007 Annual Report

From October 2006 through September 2007 (FY2007), JVA visited the following locations to interview refugees:

  • Kenya: Nairobi, Dadaab and Kakuma ;
  • Burundi: Bujumbura ;
  • Ethiopia: Addis Ababa and Shimelba ;
  • Uganda: Kampala ; and
  • Tanzania: Kasulu, Kibondo and Ngara .

4,296 cases (13,886 individual refugees) of the following nationalities departed for resettlement in the U.S. in FY2007:

  • Somali 6,416
  • Burundian 4,540
  • Eritrean 897
  • Ethiopian 863
  • Congolese (DRC) 770
  • Sudanese 292
  • Rwandan 71
  • Ugandan 32
  • Yemeni 5

JVA departures in previous years:

  • FY2001 - 16,024
  • FY2002 - 538
  • FY2003 - 3,708
  • FY2004 - 16,831
  • FY2005 - 12,095
  • FY2006 - 12,311

The drastic fall in numbers in FY2002 and FY2003 was a result of the attacks of 9/11/2001. It was decided, thereafter, that all refugees entering the United States had to undergo extensive security checks. This requirement slowed down the processing somewhat as no refugees could depart without having completed the required security clearances.

Departures numbers represent the “end point” of a many-step process.
