In February 2003, with the likelihood of war increasing by the week, there were concerns about the humanitarian impact an armed conflict would have on Iraq. The 1990 Gulf War and 12 years of UN sanctions had left Iraqi health services in a fragile state and with shortages in medicines and medical supplies
-
It was assumed an armed conflict would cause an increase in shortages and make shipments of additional supplies difficult. In response AoC supported a shipment of supplies to Mansour Pediatric Hospital and Iskan Pediatric Hospital in Baghdad.
-
The supplies, purchased in Amman, Jordan, were loaded and transported by truck to Baghdad February 20th, four weeks before the war began. AoC representatives from CWS and MCC observed the loading of the shipment in Amman.
-
The shipment included: Latex gloves, antibiotics, suturing supplies, blood bags, urine bags, disposable syringes, pain-killers, steroids, and other emergency supplies.
-
These supplies were delivered to the two pediatric hospitals March 23rd; 4 days after the war began.
