Location: Kerbala
Timing: February – May 2004
Budget: $167,000
- Kerbala Pediatric hospital covers a population of about 1,500,000 from the city of Kerbala and surrounding villages. Its facilities were inadequate to properly care for the patients.
- The project involved the
construction of two new wards:
- A new X-ray ward that met Ministry of Health standards for patient safety. (The previous X-ray facility lacked the equipment and design to perform X-rays safely.)
- A ward to treat children with Thalassemia, a genetic disease that attacks red blood cells and usually treated with blood transfusions. The hospital treats about 35 children a day for this disease.
- The planning of this project involved extensive consultation with the hospital administration, Kerbala Department of Health, and the Iraqi Ministry of Health. The Director of the Hospital and the Director of Kerbala Department of Health expressed their appreciation for this support and for the high quality of work performed.
