NEW YORK – You don't have to spend a lot of money or wade through crowds at malls to find a gift with meaning. This year’s Church World Service alternative gift selections are filled with meaning and practicality for people who need help way beyond the holiday season.
Global humanitarian agency Church World Service offers gifts that comfort and protect people in times of disaster and need.
The CWS Shelter Kit helps families who have lost their homes in disasters set up temporary housekeeping in tents of their own. Disaster victims able to go to shelters or camps use CWS Blankets to keep warm and comfortable.
The news has been filled with pictures of devastation: We saw lost children, alone and looking for shelter after the Southeast Asia tsunami; we saw families stranded on rooftops in New Orleans as the city flooded; and we’re seeing suddenly homeless families shivering in the cold in earthquake-stricken Pakistan, where 2.5 million people lost their homes.
You want to help — right now.
Now –- and for almost 60 years –- Church World Service has been providing emergency relief and long-term sustainable development to people overcoming adversity through its TOOLS & BLANKETS giving program.
A gift of $172 can buy a Shelter Kit for a displaced family. The kit includes a family-sized tent, ground cover, and four blankets. Just $20 can buy a set of four Disaster Relief Blankets (tent not included).
Field and garden seeds are a gift of $15; a pushcart or wheelbarrow and hoe, shovel, and rake are $57. A rabbit hutch and two rabbits is a gift of $50, while the gift of water in the form of a bicycle with water mount is $120. And five school desks cost $50.
You can make cash contributions for as many tools and blankets as you wish. Give them in your own name or in the names of children, friends, relatives or colleagues; then send a gift card to the recipient of your gift, letting them know sustainable help has been given in their name. Your gift is a contribution to the entire CWS TOOLS & BLANKETS Program.
"This is a meaningful and lasting opportunity for families, individuals, or businesses to add significance to their holiday giving," says CWS Executive Director and CEO Rev. John L. McCullough.
