Java, Indonesia: Earthquake and Tsunami Kill Some 550 People, CWS Provides Emergency Food
July 19, 2006INDONESIA--updated 7/20--The deathtoll from the earthquake and tsunami that hit the southern coast of Java on July 17 has reached some 550 people, and more than 200 people are reportedly still missing. Internally Displaces Persons are still sheltering in public halls, mosques, and available grounds in fear of aftershocks, as well as predictions of a bigger earthquake.
CWS Indonesia has responded by distributing mineral water and biscuits in Kebumen and Cilacap districts, Central Java. Currently, CWS Indonesia is also beginning to assist via a field kitchen by providing rice, cooking oil, eggs, soy sauce, sugar, mineral water, instant noodles, vegetables, and kerosene to support 50 households in Adipala village, Cilacap district.
Meanwhile, CWS emergency response team is also bringing food items (baby biscuit, oil, canned fish, instant noodle, salt, and sugar) for approximately 200 households. The team includes a water and sanitation specialist from Norwergian Church Aid who will assess water and sanitation neeeds.
The CWS emergency response is being conducted in coordination with Action by Churches Together, as well as CWS partners Yakkum Emergency Unit and Yayasan Tanggul Bencana Indonesia.
