Situation Report: Pakistan Flooding
July 31, 2006Heavy rains and flooding are affecting the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), Punjab and Sindh sections of Pakistan. Worst affected are sections of the NWFP, which are still recovering from the devastating October 2005 earthquake that killed upwards of 73,000.
According to a report by Church World Service Pakistan/Afghanistan, heavy rains lashed many villages last week, damaged houses and crops and killed hundreds of cattle. At least 250 families are affected in NWFP alone and those have evacuated to safer ground, in need of assistance. Last Wednesday (July 26), rampaging flood water had swept away the villages of Guldhary and Gulsary in Tehsil Balakot (NWFP). The government of Punjab has declared high alert in 12 districts of the province to meet possible flood threat.
RESPONSE: CWS Pakistan/Afghanistan has begun responding in Tehsil Balakot, in NWFP, with the pre-positioning of items including tents, plastic sheets and blankets, and teams from the Church World Service Emergency Field Office in Mansehra are conducting initial assessments and are in close coordination with local authorities.
Church World Service has applied for a Rapid Response Fund (RRF) grant from Action by Churches Together for the costs of these initial supplies and the assessments.
