CWS situation report: Mexico floods

More than 800,000 have been left homeless in flooding in the state of Tabasco, Mexico, and rescue operations are still continuing.
On Sunday (Nov. 4) some 5,000 people were evacuated from rooftops, the Reuters news agency reported, and another 8,000 remain trapped in homes. The flood has affected 1 million people -- half of the population of the state of Tabasco, and President Felipe Calderon has called the flooding one of the worst natural disasters in modern Mexican history.
RESPONSE: Church World Service is responding to this disaster by supporting efforts of its partner agency Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA). PDA and its affiliate, Iglesia Nacional Presbiteriana de Mexico (the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico) are assisting disaster survivors by providing shelter, meals, water, and basic health services.
Further efforts will probably include the provision of clean-up and household supplies, as well as shelter materials/assistance.
