CWS situation report: 2008 March tornadoes
March 17, 2008A weekend outbreak of severe storms has left at least two people dead and millions of dollars in damage across Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. Downtown Atlanta experienced significant damage, prompting a disaster declaration from Georgia Governor Sonny Purdue. One tornado apparently touched down in South Carolina, a rare funnel cloud packing 135-mph winds.
Impact on vulnerable communities appears to be minimal. In downtown Atlanta, high-end loft apartments sustained considerable damage.
RESPONSE: CWS continues to be in contact with faith-based and other disaster response partners to assure assistance to vulnerable communities identified as affected by this series of storms.
