CWS situation report: 2008 March tornadoes

March 17, 2008

A weekend outbreak of severe storms has left at least two people dead and millions of dollars in damage across Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. Downtown Atlanta experienced significant damage, prompting a disaster declaration from Georgia Governor Sonny Purdue. One tornado apparently touched down in South Carolina, a rare funnel cloud packing 135-mph winds.

Impact on vulnerable communities appears to be minimal. In downtown Atlanta, high-end loft apartments sustained considerable damage.

RESPONSE: CWS continues to be in contact with faith-based and other disaster response partners to assure assistance to vulnerable communities identified as affected by this series of storms.
