NEW YORK -- Richard Williams was elected to the position of director of the Social and Economic Development Program of humanitarian agency Church World Service by the agency's board of directors. The election took place at the agency's April board meeting in New York City.
The SED Program develops and manages social economic and development projects in partnership with local organizations in 80 countries. Williams has been interim director for the past year.
In announcing the appointment, CWS Executive Director and CEO Rev. John L. McCullough said, "Richard brings to this position a deep familiarity with CWS partners and staff around the globe, as well as an excellent vision for development within the strategic direction of Church World Service."
Prior to his work with CWS's development program, Williams served six years as an associate director in the agency's Mission Relationships and Witness Program, where he was responsible for the development of relationships with regional church councils and ecumenical organizations in Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe. He also served on the leadership team in the development of the 2008-2011 CWS Strategic Plan.
He came to Church World Service from the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, where he served in the Office of Loan Administration; with the Volunteers for Africa Program; and then as an Assistant General Secretary.
Williams earned his B.S. in communications from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
