New Associate Director for International Response Named

Fidele Lumeya has been named the Emergency Response Program’s Associate Director for International Response. He begins his duties January 23. Most recently Lumeya worked with Refugees International and prior to that was a country director for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in Angola.

Linda Reed Brown Honored by Rural Ministry Center

Linda Reed Brown, ERP Associate Director for Domestic Response, has been named one of 12 honorees of the first John Bennett Award for Meritorious Ministry in Church and Community given by the Missouri School of Religion Center for Rural Ministry. The award, given Nov. 18, recognizes persons who, among other things, have exhibited moral courage in addressing critical issues, as well as displaying compassion and care in congregation and community ministry.

Update on DRRL Assignments

Domestic Disaster Response and Recovery Liaison (DRRL) Joann Hale is in New Orleans and surrounding areas through Sunday, Jan. 22, along with members of the United Church of Christ (UCC) Disaster Ministries network, examining aspects of technological-caused disasters. The group will meet local leaders from Louisiana Environmental Action Network (LEAN) and with Wilma Subra, president of the Subra Company, which has performed environmental testing around the 9th Ward area that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

DRRL Lesli Remaly provided long-term recovery training in December on three teleconferences for United Way of America affiliates responding to the 2005 hurricanes.

ITRT Plans Future Events Following Last Training in 2005

Church World Service Interfaith Response Trauma Training (ITRT) is planning future events this year in New Orleans, out-state Louisiana and in Mississippi. The last ITRT event for 2005 was held Nov. 9 in Houston in partnership with the Christian Church’s Week of Compassion. The event included 28 participants, 24 of them pastors and all but one of them members of the Christian Church (Disciples) denomination.
