DRRLs Conduct Long-term Recovery Workshop

Domestic Disaster Response and Recovery Liaisons (DRRLs) Lesli Remaly and Tim Johnson conducted a long-term recovery workshop this week in Hattiesburg, Miss. Nearly 100 participated, with presenters from a number of partner aid agencies. The event was co-sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

CWS Sponsors Series of Trainings in Amman, Jordan

CWS sponsored a series of trainings for members of NGO staff in February in Amman, Jordan. The Feb.14-16 security training drew 19 participants from nine agencies, while two three-day drivers trainings held Feb.18-23 drew 34 participants from 12 agencies. Participants came from Iraq and the West Bank and Gaza.

Since March 2004 a total of 335 people from 51 agencies have participated in six security and 11 drivers trainings in Amman.

ERP Associate Director Urges Darfur Action

Following his appearance at a Darfur rally early in February in Washington DC, Fidele Lumeya, CWS's associate director for international emergency response, spoke recently at a press conference held by a number of US religious groups spotlighting the need for further action in the Darfur region of Sudan. At the Feb. 15 press conference, Lumeya spoke of his own experiences working in Darfur and the need for an improved protection force. He also noted that tribal leaders are asking for help in finding points of reconciliation between communities. "This is something no one is paying attention to," Lumeya said. "The world is not using the multi track diplomacy in Darfur."

CWS Continues Shipments for Gulf Coast Hurricanes Response

Three shipments were sent to CWS partners in Mississippi and Louisiana in support of their ongoing hurricane recovery efforts. The shipments included, "Gift of the Heart" Kits -- 150 Baby Kits; 360 School Kits; 5,940 Cleanup Buckets; and 64 Kits for Kids -- and 8,000 CWS blankets. In all CWS has provided a total of 136,123 kits, and 56,970 blankets in response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. CWS Donates 11,250 Lightweight Blankets for Use in Four Regions of Africa

Blankets were donated to Global Assistance, an Oregon-based humanitarian aid agency, and are being distributed to hospitals and orphanages in Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and South Africa.

SECR, ITRT Plan Events in Mississippi

A Church World Service Spiritual and Emotional Care Resource (SECR) team is scheduled to work April 5 with the board members of the Mississippi Coast Interfaith Disaster Task Force in Gulfport, Miss. On April 6, CWS Interfaith Trauma Response Training (ITRT) will hold a workshop from 9 to 12:00 in Gulfport, Miss. The April 6 event will be open to caregivers from the faith community including clergy, chaplains and social workers from the Mississippi Coast.
