CWS co-sponsors summit on Hurricane Rita recovery
In Texas, at least 5,000 families still struggle with damage from Hurricane Rita. Overshadowed by the profound and notorious damage of Hurricane Katrina, the survivors of Rita call their's, "the forgotten disaster." CWS, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Southeast Texas Interfaith Organization today sponsored a Hurricane Rita summit. The meeting brought together long-term recovery organizations and disaster response groups to showcase the level of need in Texas and promote regional recovery.
CWS DRRLs win national award
The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD)
presented the CWS Disaster Response and Recovery Liaison (DRRL)
Program its 2007 National Member Award for Excellence. DRRLs Lura
Cayton, Joann Hale, Lesli Remaly-Netter, Heriberto Martinez, Tom
Davis and Tim Johnson were honored among other National VOAD member
organizations in a ceremony at the National VOAD conference in
Albuquerque, N.M. April 19.
CWS ships resources in response to East Coast, Texas storms
Deadly storms in the last two weeks claimed at least 10 lives, displaced thousands and caused millions of dollars in damage. So far seven states have received federal disaster declarations. In response, CWS has shipped resources:
- Bound Brook, N.J.: 210 CWS Blankets, to the Presbyterian Church
of Bound Brook - Patterson, N.J.: 60 CWS Blankets, 105 CWS School
Kits, 100 CWS
Health Kits, 94 CWS Emergency Cleanup Buckets, 104 CWS Kid's Kits, all to Catholic Charities of
Paterson - Eagle Pass, Tex.: 200 CWS Blankets, 225 CWS Health Kits
In addition, CWS DRRL Heriberto Martinez will deploy over the
weekend to Eagle Pass to facilitate long-term recovery.
