Deadly Cyclone Strikes New Guinea
Tropical Cyclone Guba, a Category 1 storm struck Papua, New Guinea Nov. 12, bringing torrential rains, high tides and severe flooding to Oro and Milne Bay provinces in the east of the country. Government figures list 143,000 people affected, with at least 164 casualties in Oro. The CWS Asia Regional Coordinator is in contact with representatives from the Lutheran Church in the area to determine if a response is needed.
After Cyclone, Bangladesh's Damage Profound
Assessment continues following the Nov. 15 cyclone in Bangladesh, that killed
nearly 3,000 people. Estimates indicate more than 1,700 are missing as aid begins
to reach those in need. CWS supports ACT member Christian Commission for Development
in Bangladesh (CCDB) as it works to provide food, clothing, shelter and safe
water sources to those displaced.
CWS aid helps recovery continue in Caribbean
Relief work continues in the Dominican Republic, where CWS partner SSID has
been working in the impoverished communities known as bateyes.. Tropical Storm
Noel killed at least 122 people as it churned over Haiti and the Dominican Republic
Nov. 4. To date, SSID has distributed hundreds of CWS Blankets and more than
8,400 servings of canned food.
