Update on Material Resource Shipments
Church World Service has sent 600 CWS Blankets and 200 Emergency Cleanup Buckets, with a total value of $11,856, to the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Mount View, AR, in response to the tornadoes that hit the south-central U.S. last week. This is in addition to an earlier shipment of 1,035 CWS Hygiene Kits, 200 CWS Blankets and 200 CWS Clean-up Buckets sent to the church last week. The earlier shipment also included 200 CWS Blankets and 585 CWS Hygiene Kits to a CWS Emergency Response domestic roundtable partner, Adventist Community Services, in Clinton, AK.
CWS also provided 420 CWS Blankets, 405 CWS Hygiene Kits and 200 CWS Emergency Cleanup Buckets to First Christian Church of Watseka, IL at a value of $15,721. Although flood damage was extensive, Watseka did not receive federal disaster assistance.
CWS project aims to reduce vulnerability in California
Domestic Emergency Response Specialist Joann Hale met with five Native American groups impacted by the fall southern California wildfires. In addition to helping the small, rural tribes organize to recover from the fires and prepare for future disasters, CWS joined the United Church of Christ to help the tribes purchase emergency power generators and tools. The digging tools will be used to help reconnect power lines burned down by the fires and bury them, so indigent communities can maintain electrical service in most disasters.
CWS Staff Safe, Evaluating Situation in East Timor Following Violence
CWS staff is safe following violence that erupted in the wake of the assassination attempt on President Jose Ramos-Horta of East Timor earlier this week. CWS staff are determining if there are any needs of the displaced to which CWS will need to respond.
CWS Monitoring Flooding in Bolivia
CWS and its regional partners are monitoring flooding in Bolivia that has prompted President Evo Morales to decree a national disaster declaration.
