The week before Thanksgiving 2002, the Sinikithemba HIV+ Choir from Durban, South Africa arrived in the United States to begin a three-week concert tour in collaboration with American composer Tim Janis. Sponsored by Church World Service, the “Give Us Hope” tour sought to raise resources for and awareness about the AIDS crisis in Africa, and to vividly convey the beauty, courage, and creativity of the people of Africa. The choir's first concert was at the Riverside Church in New York City, on World AIDS Day.
