Some 80,000 people were killed in the Oct. 8, 2005, earthquake that hit Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan. These images of Church World Service recovery efforts were taken by CWS Emergency Response staffer Chris Herlinger in April 2006.  To view the photos in this gallery, please click on the page numbers listed above.

To help fill a health care void caused by the October 2005 earthquake, Church World Service operates a Basic Health Unit (BHU) and two mobile health units consisting of a traveling team of a doctor, two nurses and related staff that visit isolated communities near the city of Rawalakot, in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir (Azad Kashmir). Here staffers Nasreen and Saima of the mobile health unit prepare the distribution of medical items.
