The opening of the CWS-supported Njokerio-Mwihoti water project by Kenya's Minister of Water and Irrigation signaled the start of a national water strategy for East African countries. The strategy builds on the capacity of communities to inform national policies with traditional approaches to water management. Community-based water management systems offer viable alternatives to models based on profit favored by transnational corporations and international financial institutions.
