One-fifth of the world's people don't have access to safe drinking water. More than 25,000 people every day die from water-borne diseases. Only 0.007 percent of the Earth's water is available for human consumption. The available supply is consumed, polluted or lost by human damage of ecosystems faster than ever before. Comprising six percent of the world's population, North Americans use 36 percent of the world's available water. Water is also being bought and sold as a commodity by transnational corporations under world trade and investment systems that favor wealthy nations.
