Case Study 14: Back to Square One
Name: Gul Zaman
Place: Pataka
Gul Zaman, 45, lives in the village of Pataka, Garhi Habibullah. He and his younger brother, Shah Zaman, were employed in a multinational company in Karachi.
Gul had three sons and two daughters. One of his daughters died in the quake when his mud house collapsed. Gul’s younger brother, Shah Zaman, also lost his life, and leaves behind two daughters and a son.
Because his village is situated in the mountains and therefore difficult to reach, the only aid they have received is that which has been air-dropped into their locality.
Gul Zaman is now living with his family--including his nephew and nieces--in his field, under drawn plastic sheets. The CWS Pakistan/Afghanistan team was the first to visit Pataka village.
CWS distributed shelter kits, flour bags, blankets, quilts, and mattresses.
Gul Zaman said that he felt that he would not be able to recover in twenty years what he had lost in mere seconds.
Gul was afraid of the future, given that he now had to bring up so many children, including his nephew and nieces. "The weather is soon going to turn very cold," he says. "What will I do then?"
Church World Service is working to provide shelter kits (family-sized
tent, ground sheet, plastic sheet, two iron poles, and four blankets),
as well as family food packages, to 20,000 of the worst-affected families.
