Case Study 6: Everyone Needs Tents!
Name: Masood
Area: Battagram district, NorthWest Frontier Province,
Pakistan
Date: 15 October 2005
Under the blue tarpaulin, Masood is protecting himself from the rain. His home village is one of the many remote villages in Battagram that have been badly affected by the earthquake. His village used to be home to 1,200 people. Now 250 of them are dead, up to 350 are injured, and he estimates that about 50% of the houses have been destroyed.
Last Saturday (8 October) when the earthquake struck, Masood was alone in his house. While the house was collapsing, he miraculously managed to escape the building. Masood strongly believes that Allah saved his life.
The army brought Masood and a few other injured villagers to the Army Relief Camp in Battagram. Masood's task is to bring back tents to his home village. The survivors are in immediate need of tents, since winter is drawing nearer, the temperature is going below 10 degrees, and snow is already covering the mountain peeks--much earlier than usual.
The survivors, especially the injured, are in immediate need of tents so that they can protect themselves from the harsh winter, which is fast approaching.
Church World Service is helping to provide shelter kits (family-sized tent, ground sheet, plastic sheet, two iron poles, and four blankets), as well as family food packages, to 20,000 of the worst-affected families.
