Church World Service began immediately began providing emergency assistance to earthquake survivors in October 2005--tents, blankets, food, medical care, water and sanitation, etc.--and took responsibility for one of the tent villages, while also providing supplies to other camps.

Now, as survivors return to village areas, CWS will be assisting families and communities in the reconstruction of quake- resistant homes (partly by providing training in building trades), and in the restoration of livelihoods and livestock, and water and sanitation. CWS also continues to provide health assistance and psychosocial support activities.
