CWS Response Update: Tsunami Recovery
Jan. 7, 2005
SITUATION: A Church World Service medical team of two
doctors and a psychosocial mental health specialist arrived earlier
this week in Aceh to conduct an assessment of ways the agency
can respond to ongoing trauma caused by the tsunamis and their
aftermath.
That assessment comes as communications and travel in the affected province
remain difficult, CWS Indonesia reported.
Despite difficulties, however, planned distribution of food and non-food items
is slated to begin shortly in Banda Aceh by CWS; a procurement of water and
dried foods arrived in Banda Aceh earlier this
week; aid and emergency relief is being coordinated between CWS, Mamamia --
a local CWS partner in Aceh -- and local provincial government agencies.
Further assessments for the construction of latrine, water and hygiene facilities
for the displaced people are also under way.
Meanwhile, an airlift of 100 IMA Medicine Boxes bound for Indonesia is being
processed; the IMA Medicine Boxes each contain drugs and medical products
to treat common illnesses of 1,000 adults and children for about three months.

Church World Service is providing family shelter kits, emergency medical
supplies, food, water, cooking utensils, CWS Blankets, Health, and
School Kits, and other essentials to survivors of the Dec. 26 tsunami--over
$1,000,000 in supplies thus far--in affected parts of Indonesia and
Sri Lanka. CWS rapid response teams deployed from Indonesia and Pakistan
are assisting with distribution and ongoing needs assessment. CWS
has also provided rapid response grants to help meet emergency needs
in Indonesia and India.
In the coming months, CWS will be assisting 50,000 displaced persons in Banda
Aceh, Indonesia, with food and non-food essentials, medical and trauma recovery
care, and rehabilitation and reconstruction. CWS will be providing support
to strengthen food security and livelihood recovery by providing seeds, tools,
and fishing equipment. Special emphasis is on the needs of female-headed
households; widows; children; the elderly; unemployed families with limited
means of support; and people or families who have not yet received aid or
support.
CWS Indonesia has been operational with relief and development programs in
Indonesia since 1964. CWS works through and with both faith-based and secular
organizations in the areas of disaster response, capacity building, and social
development, enhancing the access of the poorest families to basic needs.
In the past two years, CWS has assisted thousands of the most vulnerable
displaced families and conflict-affected people in Indonesia with food, shelter,
water and sanitation, non-food items such as cooking utensils, seeds and
tools, and health services, including significant work in the affected province
of Aceh. CWS was able to begin responding immediately to the needs of tsunami
survivors using supplies stockpiled in Indonesia for such needs.
