Recovery in Indonesia - Hopes and dreams

Nurmali, 22, has been fetching water, while her sister-in-law, Nelly, 20, cooks a mid-day meal for the small family--the two women and Nurmali’s husband, Zufrizal, and son, Reza Marzuki, age 5. They live in a temporary house the family built when the December 2004 tsunami washed away the village of Baroh, near the town of Lhoong, in Aceh Besar district--claiming the life of their nephew, among others. CWS partner MAMAMIA is helping the village to build new homes, and CWS is diverting and filtering a small portion of a nearby waterfall to provide clean water to the new village and several other nearby villages. Nurmali’s husband, Zufrizal, is up on the mountain today working with a team on the water project.

Nurmali and Nelly are hopeful about the future, but, says Nurmali, “Without help, it would be very difficult.”

Their hopes and dreams? “If I have enough money, then I’d like to go back to school. Otherwise, I’ll hope to meet someone and marry,” says Nelly. Both of the women graduated junior high, but the area high school is a bit further away, and tuition is slightly higher.

“I’ve been getting sewing lessons,” says Nurmali. “With my own sewing machine, I could start my own business.”
