Church World Service Emergency Response Update:
Southern Asia Tsunami Recovery

February 16, 2005

SITUATION: An update of the Church World Service tsunami response in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand.

INDONESIA:
+++ The CWS medical team continues providing treatment and conducting medical assessments in villages throughout affected areas of Banda Aceh. The team, in cooperation with local CWS partners, plans to coordinate weekly medical services in key areas based on those assessments. The CWS team has provided medical services to patients in 20 villages.

+++ CWS continues distributing bulk packages of food and non-food items including CWS Blankets and "Gift of the Heart" Health Kits in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar District. Packages are given in bulk, based on needs assessments and number per household. So far, CWS has distributed a total of 12,699 household packages. On February 1-2, CWS Indonesia staff also distributed instant food and packed rice to 1,119 internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in temporary camps in the region.

+++ CWS, in collaboration with partner Norwegian Church Aid, has installed a water-treatment system in Rantau Panjang Village in Meulaboh, on the west coast of Aceh. The water system is supplying 4,000 households with clean water. A second, larger water system is being installed now and will be fully operational in the coming weeks.

+++ The CWS psychosocial mental health team is providing on-site counseling, including informal learning and play therapy for adults and children in two IDP camps and for IDPs living with host families in Aceh Besar.

+++ 5,000 mosquito nets are ready for distribution from the CWS warehouse in Medan. The nets will help prevent malaria and other infectious diseases spread by mosquitoes.

+++ CWS Executive Director John L. McCullough, accompanied by CWS-Indonesia Director Maurice Bloem, traveled to Medan, Banda Aceh, and Meulaboh in early February.

SRI LANKA:
+++ CWS is providing more supplementary food for on-going relief efforts in Sri Lanka. The food items have a value of $180,918 and will be distributed by CWS partner Interfaith Fellowship for Peace and Development.

INDIA:
+++ CWS and its member denominations have sent financial resources to partner CASA (Church's Auxiliary for Social Action) for its continuing relief and rehabilitation efforts.

THAILAND:
+++ CWS has provided 100 Interchurch Medical Assistance medicine boxes to help meet the needs of tsunami survivors in Thailand. Each medicine box provides basic medicines for 1,000 persons for about three months. The medicines are being used in a number of clinics that are providing emergency and long-term treatment for tsunami survivors.
