According to the 2007 World Refugee Survey, 2,932,000 people are refugees and asylum seekers in Africa. This number represents just over 20 percent of the world's total number of refugees and asylum seekers. Civil conflicts and regional wars have uprooted millions, forcing them to flee to countries of asylum.
The U.S. Government (Section 101(a)(42) of the INA, amended) defines a refugee as any person who is outside of his or her country of origin and is unwilling or unable to return to his or her home country due to a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.
OPE/Accra will provide processing services to refugees who meet this definition and are eligible under Priority 1, 2 and 3. In addition, OPE/Accra processes Visa 92/93 beneficiaries located in Ghana.
