OPE/Accra Annual Report

From October 2006 through September 2007 (FY2007), OPE/Accra visited the following locations to interview refugees:

  • Bangui, Central African Republic
  • Banjul, Gambia
  • Cotonou, Benin
  • Dakar, Senegal
  • Franceville, Gabon
  • Freetown, Sierra Leone
  • Libreville, Gabon
  • Lome, Togo
  • Takoradi, Ghana
  • Tchibanga, Gabon
  • Yaounde, Cameroon

839 cases of 2,192 individuals representing the following nationalities departed for resettlement to the U.S. in FY 2007:

  • Democratic Republic of Congo (50)
  • Central African Republic (12)
  • Equatorial Guinea (14)
  • Ghana (4)
  • Ivory Coast (7)
  • Mauritania (62)
  • Liberia (1,459)
  • Rwanda (130)
  • Sierra Leone (128)
  • Sudan (9)
  • Togo (33)
  • Zimbabwe (1)

OPE/Accra Departures in previous years:

  • 1,858 in FY 2002
  • 4,122 in FY 2003
  • 8,296 in FY 2004
  • 5,250 in FY 2005
  • 3,089 in FY 2006

It should be noted that during FY 2004, OPE/Accra was involved in the large-scale resettlement of Liberians at Risk located in Ivory Coast.

Processing Summary for FY 2007

  • Total Pre-CIS Data Entry New Cases: 1,429 cases of 4,511 individuals
  • Total OPE/Accra Interviews: 1,550 cases of 4,067 individuals
  • Total CIS Adjudications: 1,541 cases of 3,981 individuals
  • Total CIS Approvals: 888 cases of 2,169 individuals

Cultural Orientation Summary for FY 2007

During fiscal year 2007, 1,359 students completed the CWS/OPE West Africa Cultural Orientation program. Classes were taught in eight countries throughout the region for students of 13 varying nationalities. Liberians accounted for 75 percent of the participants, followed by students from Congo-Brazzaville and Sierra Leone.
