"Will the church

merely gather up those whom the wheel has crushed or will it prevent the wheel from crushing them?" asked Bishop Mvume Dandala of the All Africa Council of Churches, citing Dietrich Bonhoeffer, at a January meeting in Nairobi facilitated by the council and Church World Service. In other words, are African churches going to sit on the sidelines while the forces of economic globalization grind the people of the continent further into poverty? In answer, partner church councils, fellowships, and other agencies agreed to demystify globalization and bring economic literacy to the pew, the farm, and the market stall. They plan to begin by educating church leaders about trade and other issues of economic justice that impact the lives of the poor in Africa.
