These were the watchwords of J. Richard Butler, executive director of CWS
in the mid-1980s, who died January 25, at his home in New York. A member
of the United Church of Christ, Butler served the church and the world in
many capacities during his 74 years. In 1960, he took a Middle East assignment
on behalf of CWS, and in 1962 he became executive secretary of the Near East
Council of Churches Committee on Refugee Work. As CWS Middle East director
during the 1970s, Butler arranged for the U.S. hostages in Tehran to have
a Christmas Day visit by three U.S. clergy. At the time of his death, Butler
was the Assistant to the President at Union Theological Seminary. Above,
Butler received a $700 check from Robin Hendrickson for hungry children in
Ethiopia (1984).
