30 Years and Counting
Clifford and Mary Schoenike (ages 93 and 92) received a plaque last fall for participating in every Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, CROP Hunger Walk since the first one, 30 years ago. The Schoenikes, who began walking in their sixties, say they will continue to walk for as long as they can. "We believe in what the CROP Walk does -- eliminating landmines, planting trees, etc. -- all these things that do good for developing countries, the United States, and the local food pantry," says Mary Schoenike.
Long-time recruiters for Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Mary says everyone should participate for the health benefits and because it's for a good cause. "When you look at pictures in the organization's SERVICE magazine, and see people having to walk long distances to get water... the slogan 'We walk because they walk' means something. Do it for your church, do it for people in need, and do it for yourself."
