SINGING FOR LIFE IN SOUTH AFRICA
“Giving enlarges the purpose of our lives,” said composer/conductor/pianist Tim Janis. "When I first planned this trip to Africa with Church World Service, I never imagined I would feel so hopeful at the end of it. The music and courage of the South African people I worked with inspired me. It is amazing to see such hope among people struggling with HIV/AIDS and to see such dedication among the people working with them."

Tim Janis approached CWS less than a year ago asking if he could help to raise funds to assist AIDS projects in Africa by creating a benefit CD. Church World Service contacted two of its partners in South Africa — Sinikithemba (We Give Hope) Christian Care Center in Durban and the South African Council of Churches — and an incredible collaboration began to unfold.

Tim recorded with two choirs — the Sinikithemba HIV+ Choir (above right), in Durban, and the world famous Imolonji KaNtu Choral Society (above left) in Soweto. He also graciously agreed to perform benefit events while in South Africa.

The special “AIDS in Africa Benefit Edition” of the CD "A Thousand Summers" is now available from Church World Service. One hundred percent of the purchase price of the CD goes to support CWS HIV/AIDS programs in Africa.
