Haiti: Local ties make for an effective response

CWS's long ties to communities in Haiti have laid the groundwork for an effective response to the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that leveled the Haitian capital and surrounding communities. "The fact that our local partners know their neighborhoods and, even as people are displaced, have the connections to locate them allows for effective distribution," notes CWS's Don Tatlock from Port-au-Prince, one week after the devastating Jan. 12 quake. Two grassroots fundraisers held in Miami, Florida, collected nearly $2,500 for the Haitian earthquake response work of Church World Service. On January 17, Zu Galeria Fine Arts hosted a one-day sale of art by Julio Gonzalez Consuegra, who donated 100 percent of his profits – close to $1,100 – to CWS. Gallery owner Manny Lopez said the artist "wanted to donate his work to an organization helping Haiti. I thought of Church World Service right away." One day earlier, Adrian Durañona, CWS-Miami Cuban-Haitian Processing Caseworker and a student at Florida International University, organized a street-corner collection that brought in nearly $1,400.
