Church World Service (CWS) opened an office in Miami, Florida, in 1960 in response to the needs of refugees fleeing Cuba in the aftermath of the revolution. Since then, the office has responded to subsequent waves of Cubans, Haitians and other refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants in South Florida by providing needed social and legal services - including, most recently, assisting Haitians to apply for Temporary Protected Status following the recent earthquake in Haiti.  (See CWS Enfòmasyon: Estati Tanporè Pwoteje pou Ayiti to learn about this in Creole.)

Those services have touched literally hundreds of thousands of lives as CWS-Miami has welcomed, fed, and clothed newcomers; reunited and strengthened families; brought healing to torture survivors, and enabled clients to become self-sufficient and integrate into their new communities.

CWS-Miami provided services to more than 14,758 clients in FY 2009 through its portfolio of programs. Specific services included:

In 2009, CWS-Miami also:

  • reunited 621 immigrants and refugees with their families in Miami-Dade County and 15 in Palm Beach County
  • helped 43 survivors of torture access mental health services
  • provided cultural and recreation outings to 200 refugees and 1,982 hours of tutoring to youth in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.

Since 2004, CWS-Miami has provided religious services at the Krome immigration detention facility.
