A What Walk?

A play for puppets or two actors. Written by Beth VanProoyen for the Willis Brown Memorial CROP Hunger Walk, Ionia, Michigan area. Suzy is up and appears to be walking when Johnny comes up and joins her.

Johnny: Hi, Suzy! What are you up to?

Suzy: Oh, hi Johnny! I'm trying to get in shape for the upcoming CROP Hunger Walk. By the way, would you like to sponsor me?

Johnny: Are you crazy? I don't want any part of any CROP Hunger Walk.

They stop walking and Suzy looks at Johnny.

Suzy: Well, why not?

Johnny: Hey, if you want a bunch of farmers mad at you because you want to walk their crops into the ground, well fine, but I want no part of it.

Suzy: (chuckling) No, Johnny. We walk to feed the hungry.

Johnny: You mean you don't walk through the farmers' fields, but you take their crops to feed some hungry people? That's stealing! You're crazy! No way do I want any part of that. (Saying this like he is trying to make sense of it all.) First you walk the farmers' crops down, then steal them for the hungry. No, No!

Suzy: (Laughing almost hysterically) No, Johnny. We don't walk through any farmer's crops.

Johnny: Well I don't want any part of stealing. That's one of the Ten Commandments, you know. Thou shalt not steal!

Suzy: (Still laughing) No, no, no, Johnny. This CROP Hunger Walk isn't going through farmers' fields or stealing their crops either. It is a way of raising money to help feed the over 800 million people who are chronically malnourished all around the world.

Johnny: So the farmers let you walk through their crops so you can raise money? I know farmer Johnson wouldn't like that. He gets so mad whenever he catches Billy and me trying to hide from Billy's little brother out in his corn field.

Suzy: Let me explain how this works. First, you get a CROP Walker Envelope from (Recruiter's name). (Recruiter's name), would you please stand, if you are here? There she/he is. Okay, then you ask people very nicely if they would like to contribute toward sponsoring you. Then you go and walk with a whole bunch of other people on (date) starting at (location).

Johnny: Well, how does walking feed the hungry?

Suzy: Your sponsors give so much money per mile you walk or just a flat amount of money. You walk as a reminder that a lot of people have to walk many miles just to find food to eat, or fuel for cooking, or water to drink. For every $60 you raise, $15 stays right here to help hungry people in our community through (local hunger fighting agency name).

Johnny: Wow, so I can help feed the hungry without getting farmer Johnson all mad?

Suzy: That's right! So, how about it?

Johnny: You know, I think I just might like to do my part, and you know who I'm going to ask to be my first sponsor?

Suzy: Farmer Johnson?

Johnny: Yup! Well, let's get walking. We need to get in shape.

They walk off together .
