Our overseas partners' request
to "tell your people what you have heard and seen" inspires and informs
Church World Service educational ministries in the U.S. The activities
outlined here attempt to be faithful to that call. They were created
by
people like you for CROP Hunger Walks, Tools
& Blankets Program celebrations, and other learning events. What
they did, you
can do, too!
- 1.3 billion people,
20% of the human family, live in absolute poverty with incomes
of
less than a dollar a day. World
Bank
- 828 million people
are hungry -- more than the population of the Western Hemisphere.
FAO
- Children are most
vulnerable.
Of the 31,000 children under five who die each day in developing nations,
half perish from hunger-related causes. That's one child dying for
every
breath we take. Grace
at the Table
- Seven million people
die from hunger-related causes annually. Famines account for only
three percent of these deaths. The vast majority are caused by chronic
under-nutrition. Bread
for the World
- 36 million people,
13% of the U.S. population, fall below the official poverty line.
U.S.
Census
- One U.S. child in
five
lives in poverty. For children under age five, it is one in four.
One
in Four
- 11.3 million children
in the U.S. are without health insurance. Children's
Defense Fund
- The rate of child
poverty
in the U.S. is triple the average for other industrial nations.
Grace
at the Table
- Worldwide hunger is
declining.
- Child survival programs
using simple, inexpensive health measures save millions of lives.
- In the U.S. the Special
Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC)
has reduced
infant mortality and anemia,
and saved taxpayer money!
- International advocacy
campaigns on landmines and reduction of third world debt show a
growing support
for
addressing the root causes of hunger.
- Contributions to CWS
provide tools of hope:
--$15 can provide struggling
farmers in Haiti with a set of garden tools.
--$30 can put a minefield probe in the hands of a de-miner in Cambodia
or the Balkans.
--$45 can buy a month's supply of oral rehydration therapy for 50 children.
--$100 can purchase the pipe necessary to bring clean water to a village.
